MINI-Z Maintenance MA-020 VE Pro SP Limited Chassis Replacement

When enjoying MINI-Z and other RC cars, one thing you simply can’t avoid is parts breaking.
Recently, while performing maintenance on my beloved machine – the MA-020 VE Pro SP Limited – I suddenly noticed… oh no!? The battery case section was cracked. Considering how long I’ve owned it, the discovery was quite a shock.
This time, I’d like to record the process of replacing the chassis.
Along with the replacement, I decided to install some option parts as well.

【 Parts to Replace 】
・MD201SPB SP Main Chassis Set (AWD MA-020) ¥1,600
・MDW100-02 Rear Chassis Set ¥1,600

【 Additional Option Parts 】
・MDW102B-02 AWD DWS Aluminum Rear Suspension Holder (Caster 0° / Toe 2°) ¥1,100
・MDW021 Aluminum Pinion Gear Set ¥1,800

The MA-020 VE Pro SP Limited chassis comes standard with many option parts:
・Hard-anodized motor cover
・Nickel-plated hex screws
・Double wishbone suspension (DWS)
・Gyro unit set

And most notably, the limited black-anodized main chassis – which, unfortunately, was the part that had cracked.
Since this black-anodized chassis was exclusive to this set, it’s no longer obtainable.
A part connecting the chassis and suspension had already cracked earlier due to over-tightened screws, so I replaced that section using the MDW100-02 Rear Chassis Set. This area tends to be removed frequently, but the tightening force required is very delicate. I hope Kyosho eventually updates the material to something with a bit more toughness.
I also installed the aluminum rear suspension holder option for the DWS. Settings such as caster angle and toe angle directly affect straight-line stability and handling. I chose a safe, well-balanced setting: Caster 0° / Toe 2°.

Disassembly Begins
Next came the chassis disassembly. Here’s the front section taken apart. The photo is a little blurry, but no matter how many times I look at it, the universal swing shafts are a work of art. The precision at this tiny scale is truly impressive.
I then removed the still-active Xspeed VE brushless motor. The hard-anodized motor cover not only improves cooling performance but also enhances the premium look. I especially like its subdued light-gold color.

I swapped in the aluminum pinion gear. At first, I thought this was mostly for looks, but here are some advantages I’ve considered:
Benefits of Aluminum Pinion Gears
・Durability – Plastic gears wear out or chip during long runs, but aluminum lasts longer, especially with high-torque brushless motors.
・Precision – Machined aluminum gears offer accurate tooth pitch and less run-out, giving smoother power delivery, less gear noise, and reduced power loss.
・Heat Dissipation – Aluminum conducts heat, helping to release motor heat during high RPM or long runs.
・Stable Settings – Plastic gears wear down, changing mesh and gear ratio over time. Aluminum gears maintain consistent performance, ideal for racing.
・Aesthetics – Anodized colors like gold or red add a custom look and satisfy the collector’s spirit.

Of course, there are downsides:
・Louder gear noise (harder material → more sound)
・Higher cost (¥1,800 for aluminum vs. ¥700 for plastic)
To be honest, I think plastic is good enough for most cases.

Servo Gearbox & Chassis Work
When opening the servo gear box, starting at the clawed tabs can easily cause breakage. Instead, opening from the tab-less side makes it simple and safe.
Once disassembled from suspension to motor case, the number of tiny parts really highlights how authentic and detailed MINI-Z machines are.
In my opinion, the servo assembly is the trickiest part of any MINI-Z chassis. The servo case pins are thin and break easily if twisted. I’ve broken mine multiple times…
I also noticed a difference in the gold-plated terminal color between the MA-020 VE Pro SP chassis and the MD201SPB SP main chassis set. The SP chassis terminals had a deeper, more vivid tone. Probably a production lot variation.
Successfully transplanting the servo gears, I then attached the terminals.
For the battery wiring, I referenced the diagram shown in the photo. Since the manual didn’t cover this step, I’ll note it here: mixing up wire colors can cause malfunctions, so please be careful.

Chassis Fitment Issues
During assembly, I found that some front-end parts from the SP Limited chassis didn’t perfectly fit with the SP main chassis set. In the end, I had to force-fit and screw them in. Perhaps it’s designed specifically for the SP Limited? Someday, if I find another SP Limited chassis, I’ll swap it properly.
After carefully tightening all screws (avoiding over-tightening), I successfully transplanted everything into the new SP chassis.
Looking at the finished build, I can’t help but think: black chassis still looks the best.

Final Thoughts
Although the MA-020 VE Pro SP Limited chassis was released about 9 years ago, it’s still going strong. I’ll continue to treasure it.
A small machine with big potential – the charm of MINI-Z never ends.
Thanks for reading until the end.
