In Memory of Chairman Shunsaku Tamiya
On July 18, 2025, Shunsaku Tamiya, Chairman of Tamiya, Inc. and beloved worldwide as a “missionary of model culture,” passed away. Through plastic models, RC cars, and Mini 4WD, he dedicated his life to spreading the joy of building and the thrill of playing across generations. His achievements are immeasurable. Personally, I grew up with Tamiya products, which inspired my hobbies and broadened my interests. I am deeply grateful for his contributions and respectfully offer my heartfelt condolences.
Recently, I had the opportunity to visit TAMIYA PLAMODEL FACTORY TOKYO, located about a 10-minute walk from Shimbashi Station in Tokyo. This venue was newly opened on May 24, 2024, relocating from the former “Tamiya Plamodel Factory Shimbashi Store” at the intersection of Shintora-dori and Akarenga-dori. The new store is a place where the essence of Tamiya is concentrated. While it is well known as a sacred spot for plastic model and Mini 4WD enthusiasts, I was impressed by the expanded product selection and the redesigned interior aimed at welcoming visitors from all over the world.
Stepping inside, you are greeted by a life-sized Mini 4WD “Aero Avante.” Its presence is overwhelming and instantly fills you with excitement. Toward the back is a café area, a special space where you can take a break while surrounded by models. It’s the perfect spot to sip coffee while contemplating your next kit to build or planning out your next set of parts.
At the entrance, the beautifully crafted finished models immediately draw your attention, but as you head deeper inside, you’ll find the dedicated RC display area. Here, the latest electric cars, popular off-road models, and even completed classics from years past are showcased with stunning presence. Being able to closely examine the fine details of chassis structures is a rare treat only possible in such a flagship store. While the store also offers a wide range of plastic models, Mini 4WD, and Tamiya merchandise, for RC enthusiasts the real highlight is undeniably this section. I found myself losing track of time as I looked over each machine.
What stood out to me was the staff’s deep knowledge. From beginner-friendly starter kits to high-end racing models, they provide thoughtful guidance tailored to your needs. Whether it’s “What kind of surface do you want to drive on?” or “Do you prioritize speed or ease of handling?”, their advice makes the RC world accessible even to newcomers.
The parts selection is also impressive: spare tires, suspensions, motors, batteries, and a full lineup of aluminum and carbon upgrade components. Many small parts that can take time to hunt down online are available to pick up and examine in person—a major advantage.
For those specifically looking for parts, I highly recommend stepping outside the main shop and crossing to the building diagonally opposite, where you’ll find the TAMIYA MODELERS STORE. Opened on January 25, 2025, this is Tamiya’s official after-parts specialty store. Stocking around 2,000 items, it offers spare and replacement parts for scale models, RC, and Mini 4WD. I even found decal sets for plastic models and Mini 4WD body-only kits on sale. Unlike ordering from the official website—which requires shipping and handling fees—purchasing here allows you to get what you need directly, a clear advantage for hobbyists.
TAMIYA PLAMODEL FACTORY is more than just a store—it’s a place where you can truly feel Tamiya’s history and passion. It is also a space where the greatness of the “model culture” that Chairman Tamiya built can be appreciated anew. For RC fans, and for those who may be thinking about starting, it is an inspiring and highly recommended destination.
