Although my New Year’s greetings are long overdue, please allow me to say once again that I look forward to your continued support this year.
February is the time when, according to the Japanese sense of seasons, winter slowly begins to give way to spring. Even in the cold air, there is a subtle hint of the coming season. It is the perfect time to sit back and enjoy a quiet, indulgent moment admiring a favorite MINI-Z.
This time, I would like to introduce one model from the MINI-Z Auto Scale Collection that truly stands out: the Ferrari Testarossa. Many Ferrari models have been released over the years, but the Testarossa has an atmosphere that feels distinctly special, almost in a class of its own.
The Testarossa debuted in 1984 as Ferrari’s flagship model.
Its name means “red head” in Italian, a reference to the red-painted cylinder heads of its engine. While inheriting the lineage of the 512 BB, it featured a wide and low stance that symbolized its era, along with bold side strakes that gave the car its powerful and unforgettable character.
Power comes from a 4.9-liter flat-12 engine producing around 390 horsepower. An astonishing figure for its time, it allowed the car to reach a top speed close to 290 km/h.
At the same time, the Testarossa was not merely a supercar. It was also designed with high-speed cruising performance and comfort in mind, giving it the character of a true grand tourer—one of the key elements of its appeal.
The MINI-Z Auto Scale beautifully recreates the presence and elegance of the real car in palm-sized form.
The low-slung front nose, the flowing body lines, and the distinctive side strakes make it instantly recognizable as a Testarossa from any angle. It is highly satisfying to admire as a scale model, and although the body has become rare today, it reveals an entirely different expression once you put it on the track and let it run.
The Testarossa can be seen as a symbol of the 1980s, a time when Ferrari continued to represent the ultimate dream car.
Being able to enjoy that atmosphere today through MINI-Z is a unique pleasure that goes beyond the boundary between model and radio-controlled car.
On a cold February day, with a cup of coffee in hand, taking time to admire an Auto Scale body and reflect on automotive history—
such a moment of quiet luxury may be just the thing. Until next time.
